The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has released a new edition of the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard (2016 ed.). The changes include new classification levels, which includes a new scale to determine cut score (commonly referred to as the ANSI cut score), and a revised method for testing gloves to the standard.
The American National Standards Institute’s ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 cut resistance standard uses a nine (9) level scale. This easily helps users identify and zone in on the cut resistant glove and sleeve required for the specific hazard faced.
A cut level 5 glove would have to withstand at least 3,500 grams (7.7 pounds) on the blade without the material being cut through. EN 388 is the other, more widespread standard. Instead of a straight razor, it uses a rotating circular blade.
To differentiate from the old score level, the new ANSI cut levels now feature an “A” in front of the score. See the chart below that highlights the difference between the old and new scale levels. Current ANSI Cut Levels Defined: 200-400 grams to cut

Though the EN388 scale roughly correlates to the ANSI/ISEA scale for cut levels A1-A6, it still falls short of differentiating highly cut-resistant materials that fall into the A7-A9 range.
Feb 03, 2014· To further complicate, the ANSI and EN standards each utilize two different test methods, meaning the cut level could be determined by any one of four different tests. ASTM test methods The ANSI 105:2011 Standard specifies that gloves should be tested for cut resistance using the ASTM F1790-97 or ASTM F1790-05 test methods.
Apr 06, 2018· ANSI ranks the level of cut resistance from A1 to A9. A higher number indicates that the glove material resisted a higher level of cutting force during testing. For example, an A-1 cut level means 200 grams of force was applied and resisted, while an A-9 cut level means 6000 grams were resisted.
For cut resistance, ANSI/ISEA 105-2005 ranks gloves from 0-5. The test determines how much weight is required for a straight blade to cut through a material traveling 25 millimeters (1 inch). As the weight required increases, the glove's rating increases. ANSI/ISEA 105-2005 - A revision to ANSI/ISEA 105-2000. The significant changes from the ...
