Whether shipping a vehicle out for deployment knowing that it might break an axle in dangerous deployment situation is any better is, I would contend, questionable, at best.

The Pinzgauer 716 series (4x4) and 718 series (6x6), or Pinzgauer second generation, was developed in the 1980s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch. It is a further development of the original Pinzgauer all-terrain military vehicle with a diesel engine and improved all-round capabilities. First vehicle of the new line was produced in Austria in 1986.
Note - NZ was instructed to purchase the P8s - they didn’t want to - so NZ could contribute to advanced sub surveillance in the South Pacific and take the load off the US and Australia. More weight needs to be applied to NZ re it’s Frigatte replacement and air support capability.
Favoured by off-roaders everywhere the $289K per unit Pinzgauer is a useful but expensive all-terrain van. Technologically it is now trailing behind other designs (such as Duro III) and is widely available second-hand (for much less). On the other hand you won't find a Pinzgauer dealer in every town and logistical support is difficult.
